1.1 Midgar Information
Welcome to the city of Midgar. This sprawling and ever-growing metropolis is fast becoming a hub for industry, commercialism and the arts. Brought to you by the Shinra Electric Power Company, Midgar is a shining testament to the companys glory. The massive Shinra Building reaches high into the sky in the center of the city and serves as the main headquarters of the company. Employees and the wealthy live comfortably on the upper plate of the city, suspended approximately 50 meters above ground over the complex and patented Shinra Plate Support System.
Though the city is still under major construction, work is progressing at a break neck pace. The Shinra Urban Development Department has been diligently piecing together the eight sectors of the city and the corresponding mako reactors. Mako energy is the power source of the future and the claim to the Shinra Companys success and vast fortune. Some are opposed to this energy source, feeling that it hurts the planet. This opposition takes the form of rebel groups like AVALANCHE and the Empire of Wutai, who actively fight against the Shinra Company to halt their destructive machines.
On the ground under Midgar, many less fortunate people have taken up residence. Unable to afford the luxury the plate offers, these rejects of society reside in what is essentially the garbage dump of Midgar. Waste materials from construction, broken machinery and other garbage comprise the homes and storefronts of what the people have come to call the slums. Without the full attention or care of the Shinra Company and it’s army, criminals and unsavory types have found refuge in the neglected under city. Mafia bosses, slum lords, pimps and thieves make up much of the slum population. Many folk try to live their meager lives, selling what garbage they find out of their ramshackle stores or homes.
Groups such as AVALANCHE call the slums their home and use Shinras neglect of the area to their advantage in building up forces to combat the Shinra army and shut down their operations and mako reactors. Shinra fights back with excess force, using it’s impressive military might to quickly and violently suppress any and all opposition. It’s deep pockets and near monopoly of all forms of media afford them the ability to easily cover up much of their more unsavory practices.
Once the city of Midgar is complete, Shinras great plan will have come fully to fruition. Will you join them? Or will you take the side of the freedom fighters and eco-terrorists?
